Henk started playing percussion in marching and show bands at the age of 12 and by age 15 became a member of the Dutch National Youth Orchestra. He studied percussion at the Conservatory in Groningen and conducting at the conservatory of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. From 1991 till 2005 he was the conductor of the Dutch National Percussion Ensemble. Henk became a member of the WAMSB Judges Bureau in 1998 and has judged at competitions and championships in Brazil, Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia Singapore and South Africa.
Henk is employed as an advisor by Kunstfactor which is the national institute for active participation in the arts and cultural activities in the Netherlands. He served as a board member of the Dutch organisation for wind band conductors and is a founding member of Marching Bands Europe (MBE) where he is serving as a member of the board. Henk is a member of the advisory committee of the WMC in Kerkrade where he has served as a supervising judge for their marching, marching parade, show and concert competitions.
